When Should You Buy A Used Car?

The Best Time of Year to Purchase a Pre-Owned Vehicle

As we always say, buying a used car is a big investment, and with such an important choice to make, you’ll want to do it at the right time. Regardless of when it’s a good time to buy in terms of the market, you should always aim to buy when you know what you’re looking for and, most importantly, when you can afford it.However, there are certain times of the year when it may be favourable to sign on the dotted line for that stunning new-to-you car. In this article we reveal when you should buy a used car - read on to find out more.

Why buy a used car?

So, why shun a brand new car in the first place? Firstly, we’re here to dispel the misconception that buying a used car means inheriting high mileage and compromising on the specification. Thanks to finance options such as Personal Contract Purchases, frequent upgrades mean you’re able to get newer, low-mileage vehicles, without the hefty price tag that comes with a brand new car.

When should you buy a used car?

1. After the new registration plates are released

Twice a year, on 1st March and 1st September, a brand new cohort of car registrations are released. After these dates, brand new cars have new age identifiers on their registration plates, and these times of year are often used as points to aim for if you’re interested in buying a car that’s fresh off the production line.

However, those looking to enjoy the benefits of a used car can make the most of this time too. With many upgrading to a new set of wheels, their previous vehicles come up for grabs - so the choice is widened considerably twice a year!

2. At the end of a quarter

Car dealerships like ours will generally have sales targets, many of them running on a quarterly basis - the months that end the quarters are March, June, September and December. In order to keep things on track, you may find that many used car dealerships release some tempting promotions around these times, such as money off the purchase price, zero deposit finance, or freebies, such as a number of years of free servicing.

These kinds of offers tend to work out well for everyone; dealerships like ours say goodbye to more cars, and you drive away in a car you love with money still in your pocket.

3. Around public holidays

When the country is celebrating, dealerships like ours do too, with offers and promotions around public holidays. The days off themselves make even more time for browsing for your next upgrade, and offers and promotions often make buying a used car a no-brainer, so make the most of these opportunities when you can.
