Thanks to West Motors' location here in Uxbridge, we get to enjoy the benefits of being in close proximity to London - a relatively short distance away are the bright lights of the capital, with all the convenience that comes with it. However, being in Greater London does also mean that we and many of our customers have to take ULEZ (the Ultra Low Emission Zone) into consideration; and depending on the car in question, regular commutes in and around London could end up costing you a fair bit on a daily basis.  

Fortunately, many of the cars that we have in stock at West Motors are ULEZ compliant, which means that they fall within the emission standards set by Transport for London; we know a thing or two about this initiative. Below we explain more about ULEZ and its associated charge, and how you can make sure your next car is compliant. 

What is ULEZ?

Created to improve the quality of London’s notoriously polluted air, the Ultra Low Emission Zone covers Central London, within the North and South circular roads. It operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 364 days a year - Christmas Day is the only time it doesn’t apply. 

For cars, motorcycles, vans and specialist vehicles up to and including 3.5 tonnes that don’t meet the below standards, a £12.50 per day charge applies.

In order to avoid paying the charge, vehicles must meet the following standards: 

• Euro 3 for motorcycles (including mopeds, motorised tricycles and quadricycles)
• Euro 4 for petrol cars, vans, minibuses and other specialist vehicles
• Euro 6 for diesel cars, vans and minibuses and other specialist vehicles

How is ULEZ different from the congestion charge? 

While ULEZ covers the same area of central London as the congestion charge, it’s different in the sense that the congestion charge only operates at certain times: between 7.00 and 18.00 Monday to Friday, and 12.00 and 18.00 on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays. 

The charge for any vehicle travelling within the congestion charge zone is £15 per day, and it’s payable in addition to the ULEZ charge if your vehicle does not meet the ULEZ emission standards. As you can imagine, this can get a bit pricey!
